“They have done nothing” – Aston Villa duo slammed for Hull City performances

Alejandro Garnacho has barely arrived at Aston Villa and the noise has already started. That usually tells you one of two things, either the player is producing something decisive, or he is sending the wrong signals. Right now, it is the latter.

Villa’s 0-0 draw with Hull City on Saturday offered Garnacho another short run-out, 15 minutes off the bench, part of the 31 Premier League minutes he has managed since joining from Chelsea. It was enough to provoke a harsh verdict, and frankly, it is hard to say it came from nowhere.

Garnacho struggling to convince at Aston Villa

The most damning assessment came from former Villa defender Stephen Warnock: “You may as well take off Alejandro Garnacho and Tammy Abraham.

They have done nothing since they have come on the pitch.

Garnacho going down. He looks completely disinterested. Unai Emery will be furious with his changes.”

That is a serious accusation for any attacking player, especially one trying to rebuild himself. Effort is the bare minimum. Managers can work with mistakes, poor form and low confidence. What they do not tolerate is the appearance of indifference.

Garnacho’s career has moved quickly in the wrong direction. He left Manchester United in 2025, joined Chelsea, scored eight league goals last season, then was moved on again. Players with his talent do not usually change clubs that quickly unless there is a problem that follows them around.

Unai Emery has options in wide areas

Villa are not short of alternatives. Against Hull, the wide players used apart from Garnacho were John McGinn, George Hemmings and Alysson. Ibrahim Mbaye, signed from Paris Saint-Germain, stayed on the bench. Johan Manzambi is due back from injury and will add another attacking option.

That matters because places are not handed out on reputation. Emery is demanding, organised and ruthless with selection. If Garnacho thought Villa would offer a quiet reset, he may have misunderstood the situation.
