Over the past decade, Liverpool and Manchester City have produced the defining rivalry of the modern Premier League.
Their battles have delivered record points totals, title races decided by a single point, Champions League drama and some of the highest-quality football English supporters have seen. For several seasons, every meeting felt capable of determining where the Premier League trophy would end up.
This weekend, the rivalry resumes at Anfield under very different circumstances. City arrive top of the table after winning their opening five league matches, while Liverpool are unbeaten but already seven points behind. The match will also be City’s first since the guilty verdict in their long-running financial case, which the club has appealed.
That development places the entire rivalry under renewed scrutiny. If the central findings against City survive the appeal, Liverpool can reasonably argue that no club lost more during City’s rise.
However, an important distinction must be made. The findings cover financial conduct between 2009/10 and 2017/18, while the two most famous one-point title races occurred in 2018/19 and 2021/22. Liverpool’s sense of loss therefore extends beyond the seasons directly covered by the case, but any retrospective sporting remedy may be more limited.

At the beginning of the 2010s, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal remained central to discussions about Premier League power.
Manchester City’s transformation altered that landscape. Major investment enabled the club to recruit elite players and construct a team capable of winning trophies consistently.
