Tottenham Hotspur ready to push hard to sign £25m midfielder

Tottenham are doing what smart clubs should do at this stage of the market, scanning for value before the obvious option becomes the expensive one. According to TeamTalk, Spurs are among the clubs tracking Celtic midfielder Arne Engels, with the 22-year-old under consideration as a possible successor to Lucas Bergvall.

The basic outline is clear enough. Tottenham have spent heavily, Bergvall is unsettled, and the club are assessing alternatives. As reported, Engels is viewed as “a potential replacement for Bergvall, who is pushing for an exit after the £185million arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.” That tells you two things. First, Bergvall’s situation is real. Second, Tottenham are planning rather than reacting.

Arne Engels transfer battle gathering pace

This is not a one-club chase. Far from it. TeamTalk states that Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Sunderland have all been watching Engels, while Crystal Palace “remain interested” after failing to strike a deal previously. There is also continental competition, with AC Milan, Napoli, Lazio and Borussia Dortmund all credited with strong interest.

That matters, because once a player’s camp starts working multiple markets, the process can move quickly. Engels has “communicated his desire for a move to the Celtic board” and has also changed agents, moving from Wasserman to DWMA “in a bid to get a move done this summer.” That is not background noise. That is a player positioning himself for departure.

Celtic, for their part, are asking for around £25m. TeamTalk adds that they “may be willing to accept a fee just short of that amount to conclude a deal.” Given Engels is in the final 18 months of his contract, that feels realistic. Selling clubs can posture, buying clubs can wait, and eventually the price tends to land where leverage says it should.
