Does Possession Still Matter in Modern Premier League Football?

For much of the past decade, possession has been treated as one of the clearest signs of control in Premier League football. Keep the ball, move the opposition and create enough pressure to make a breakthrough. Just as importantly, a team that has possession cannot concede.

The opening weeks of the 2026/27 season have challenged that logic. Across the first 50 Premier League matches, teams recording at least 60% possession won only 36.4% of those games. During the 2023/24 campaign, the equivalent win rate was 53.5%.

A broader change was already visible last season. In 2025/26, teams with more than 50% possession recorded 137 victories, while those with less than half of the ball won 139 times. It was the first Premier League season since 2005/06 in which teams with less possession secured more wins than those that dominated the ball.

Possession still matters, but its value increasingly depends on where a team has the ball, what it does with it and how quickly it reacts when possession is lost.

Having the Ball Is Not the Same as Controlling the Game

Possession percentages reveal how long each team has the ball, but they say little about the quality of that possession.

A side can complete hundreds of passes between its goalkeeper, centre-backs and holding midfielders without seriously threatening the opposition. It may appear dominant on the statistics page while creating few clear chances.

The defending team, meanwhile, may be controlling the areas that matter. By remaining compact and protecting the centre of the pitch, it can encourage its opponent to circulate the ball in harmless positions.

This is why alternative measures have become more important. Expected goals can indicate the quality of chances, while field tilt measures how much possession a team has in the attacking third. Touches in the opposition penalty area, progressive passes and shots following high turnovers can also offer a clearer picture of attacking control.

Possession needs purpose. Without progression and penetration, it can become little more than territorial decoration.
