Chelsea will host Luton Town and Tottenham Hotspur will face Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup second round, with the ties among the standout fixtures from Monday’s draw for the competition.
Newcastle United have been drawn at home to West Bromwich Albion, while Nottingham Forest meet Leeds United in one of the round’s other headline pairings, with all matches scheduled for the week commencing Monday, August 24.
The draw took place live on Sky Sports on Monday, 10 August, with eleven Premier League clubs entering at this stage alongside the winners from the first round, according to BBC Sport.
Brentford, Chelsea, Fulham, Newcastle, Everton, Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City were the top-flight sides who went into Monday’s pot, having been given byes through the opening round. Last season, holders-in-waiting Manchester United were eliminated at this same stage by fourth-tier Grimsby Town, a reminder that these early rounds carry real jeopardy even for the bigger clubs.
Carabao Cup Draw Regionalised Again, With A Familiar Quirk
As in round one, the draw was split into northern and southern sections, primarily on geography but also with an eye on keeping the two halves competitively balanced. That explains why West Bromwich Albion sit in the northern section despite being located just a few miles from Walsall, who are drawn in the south.
Chelsea’s tie with Luton will be their fifth meeting with the Hatters in the last five years, following FA Cup wins in 2021 and 2022 and a league double during Luton’s solitary Premier League season in 2023-24. Tottenham and Charlton, meanwhile, have not met since a 2011 FA Cup third-round tie that Spurs won 3-0.
