If there is one stadium that feels made for World Cup mythmaking, it is Mexico City’s Azteca. Known globally as Estadio Azteca, commercially as Estadio Banorte, and officially during the tournament as Mexico City Stadium, the venue is about to do something no other stadium has ever done: host the opening match of a men’s FIFA World Cup for the third time. FIFA has confirmed that Mexico will open the 2026 tournament here on 11 June 2026, making this ground the first to stage World Cup openers in 1970, 1986 and 2026.
That record alone would be enough to secure Azteca’s place in football history, but the bigger story is what the stadium represents in 2026. FIFA’s expanded tournament will feature 48 teams and 104 matches across Canada, Mexico and the United States, and Mexico City’s famous arena is not just a ceremonial backdrop — it will host key games deep into the competition, including a Round of 32 tie and a Round of 16 fixture.
Why Azteca Matters More Than Ever
Azteca has always been more than a stadium. It opened in 1966, hosted the World Cup finals of 1970 and 1986, and became one of the sport’s most recognisable stages through moments associated with Pelé, Diego Maradona and the Mexico national team. It is seen as a true coliseum of world football, 2026 will make it the first stadium to appear at three different men’s World Cups.
What makes the 2026 edition especially significant is timing. Rather than living off nostalgia, Azteca is returning to the spotlight after an extensive modernization project designed specifically to prepare it for the biggest World Cup ever. The stadium had been closed since May 2024 for renovations, before reopening with a Mexico–Portugal friendly on 28 March 2026, just over two months before the World Cup opener.
The Five World Cup Matches at Azteca
FIFA’s current schedule shows that Mexico City Stadium will host five matches in total during the 2026 World Cup.
Those matches are:
11 June 2026: Mexico vs South Africa — the opening match of the entire tournament.
17 June 2026: Uzbekistan vs Colombia — a Group K match that gives the venue an early non-host-nation…..
