A Modern Away Day in a Historic Football City
York City is one of the more appealing away days in English football. The city itself is historic, compact and packed with pubs, restaurants and sightseeing options, while the football club now plays at the modern LNER Community Stadium on the north-eastern edge of York.
For away supporters, it is a very different experience from the old Bootham Crescent days. The former ground was close to the city centre and had a traditional lower-league feel. The LNER Community Stadium is newer, cleaner and more practical, sitting beside the Monks Cross and Vangarde retail parks. It may not have the same old-school charm, but it offers good facilities, covered seating and straightforward transport links.
With York City back in the Football League for the 2026/27 season, more travelling supporters will be making the trip to the Stadium of Light’s smaller namesake: the LNER Community Stadium.
The Stadium at a Glance
York City play at the LNER Community Stadium in Huntington, around three miles from York city centre. The ground opened in 2021 and replaced Bootham Crescent, which had been the club’s home for almost 90 years.
The stadium has a capacity of around 8,500 and is shared with York’s rugby league side, York Knights. It is part of a wider community and leisure complex that includes a leisure centre, cinema, library, NHS facilities and nearby shopping and food outlets.
For away fans, the main positives are comfort, visibility and convenience. The ground is modern, the concourses are tidy, the seating is covered and the views are generally strong from the visiting section.
Away Fan Allocation
Visiting supporters are usually housed either in the North Stand or in designated overflow blocks in the West Stand, depending on the expected away following and the fixture arrangements.
The North Stand is behind one of the goals and provides a decent view of the pitch. It is fully covered and all-seated, making it a comfortable place to watch the match. For larger away followings, extra blocks can be opened elsewhere in the stadium, usually in parts of the West Stand.
As ever, it is worth…
