Leeds United could become one of the first major English football clubs to use artificial intelligence to help set ticket prices dynamically.
Chairman Paraag Marathe has discussed a system that could adjust prices according to factors such as demand, seating area and an individual supporter’s relationship with the club. The idea would be partly inspired by the airline industry, where prices change according to availability and purchasing behaviour.
The proposal is not simply about increasing every ticket price. Marathe has suggested that technology could make matches more affordable for Leeds’ most committed supporters while allowing the club to charge more for casual visitors or seats located near corporate and hospitality areas.
However, dynamic pricing remains controversial. Football clubs are cultural institutions as well as commercial businesses, and many supporters will be concerned that AI could turn access to Elland Road into a constantly changing financial calculation.
The debate consequently extends beyond technology. It concerns loyalty, fairness, privacy and the place of traditional supporters within modern Premier League football.
What Has Leeds United Proposed?
Leeds are considering using AI to develop a more sophisticated ticket-pricing model.
Under the potential system, prices would not necessarily remain fixed for every supporter or throughout the sales period. Instead, the technology could consider factors such as:
Demand for a particular match
The location of the seat
How frequently a supporter attends
Previous purchases from the club
Membership status
The timing of the purchase
The availability of remaining tickets
Whether the seat is in a premium area
The profile of the opposition
The supporter’s level of engagement with Leeds
Marathe has suggested that committed fans could receive lower prices, while more casual matchgoers might pay a premium. Certain seats near hospitality or corporate sections could also be priced more aggressively.
Leeds already use different price categories and ticketing tiers, but these are determined by the club rather than automatically calculated…
