Manchester United commence their Premier League season tomorrow with an away trip to Hull City. Though Luke Shaw is expected to start at left back, the Red Devils are expected to make an addition in the position by the end of the month.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Man United held talks with Barcelona left back Alejandro Balde’s entourage over a potential transfer this summer having been linked with the Spaniard since several months.
As per the journalist, Balde remains happy at Barcelona but after Joao Cancelo’s signing, it will be interesting to see what kind of a role he has in Hansi Flick’s plans. Transfermarkt values the 22-year-old at £43 million.
Cancelo, naturally a right back, has been used extensively on the left side of defence and might be an option there for Barcelona. With Gerard Martin available as the back-up left back, Balde’s sale might benefit the Blaugrana from a financial standpoint.
Balde an excellent signing for United
If Manchester United are able to secure Alejandro Balde’s signatures from Barcelona this summer, he would prove to be an excellent signing for them and a player who they can bank on to replace Luke Shaw in the longer run.
Balde is excellent with the ball at his feet, has quick pace and can exchange passes effectively to create offensive opportunities down the left. His crossing, overlapping runs and positional intelligence make him a top quality full back.
Defensively, he has a strong physique and leverages it alongside his pace to remain on top of his opponents. Balde is particularly excellent in one-on-one situations, offering efficient coverage up top as well as at the back when not in possession.
With Barca likely to face difficulties with registering their new signings this year, they may entertain offers for Balde despite his contentment at the club and it will be interesting to see whether United are ready to take the next steps over his signing after contact with his representatives.
