Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Premier League history is a story of revival, relegation, promotion and European ambition.
Wolves were one of the most successful English clubs of the 1950s, winning three league championships under Stan Cullis. However, they were outside the top flight when the Premier League began in 1992 and spent more than a decade attempting to return.
Promotion finally arrived in 2003, but Wolves’ first Premier League campaign ended in immediate relegation. A longer top-flight stay followed under Mick McCarthy before the club suffered consecutive relegations and fell into League One.
The arrival of Fosun International and the appointment of Nuno Espírito Santo transformed Wolves again. The club won promotion in 2018, recorded consecutive seventh-place finishes and reached the Europa League quarter-finals.
That progress proved difficult to sustain. Managerial changes, restricted recruitment and the departures of important players contributed to a gradual decline, culminating in relegation from the Premier League in 2025/26.

1992: Wolves Begin the Premier League Era in the Second Tier
Wolves were not among the founding members of the Premier League.
The club began the 1992/93 season in the newly renamed First Division, which had become the second tier following the formation of the Premier League.
Wolves had recovered from a severe financial crisis during the 1980s. The club had fallen from the First Division to the Fourth Division through a series of relegations before beginning its recovery under manager Graham Turner.
Steve Bull became the central figure in that revival. His prolific goals helped Wolves win consecutive promotions from the Fourth and Third Divisions, restoring hope at Molineux.
By 1992, Wolves were an established second-tier team with ambitions of returning to the highest level.
