Petr Cech set the standard for modern goalkeeping
The modern Golden Glove era arguably begins with Petr Cech.
During the 2004/05 season, the Chelsea F.C. goalkeeper produced one of the greatest defensive campaigns in Premier League history, recording an astonishing 24 clean sheets.
That record still stands today.
Under José Mourinho, Chelsea became a defensive machine, and Cech was central to everything. Calm under pressure, positionally flawless and remarkably consistent, he quickly established himself as one of the world’s elite goalkeepers.
Cech won the Golden Glove again in 2009/10 with 17 clean sheets before later claiming another award with Arsenal F.C. in 2015/16.
His longevity and adaptability made him one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever signings.
Pepe Reina dominated the mid-2000s
Following Cech’s early dominance, Pepe Reina enjoyed a remarkable spell with Liverpool F.C..
Reina won three consecutive Golden Gloves between 2005/06 and 2007/08, recording 20, 19 and 18 clean sheets respectively.
