On 23 October 2011, Manchester City travelled across town to face Manchester United at Old Trafford and produced one of the most extraordinary performances in Premier League history. The 6-1 scoreline was emphatic, but the significance of the result stretched far beyond the margin of victory.
This was the afternoon City announced that they were no longer merely challenging Manchester’s established order. They were ready to change it.

City arrived at Old Trafford unbeaten and sitting at the top of the Premier League. Roberto Mancini’s developing side was full of talent, confidence and ambition, but questions remained about whether it could outperform the reigning champions when the pressure was at its highest.

Balotelli Sets the Tone

Mario Balotelli met James Milner’s pass with a calm, controlled finish into the bottom corner. His celebration became one of the defining images of the Premier League era. Balotelli lifted his shirt to reveal the now-famous message: “Why Always Me?”
It was humorous, provocative and perfectly suited to the occasion.
More importantly, the goal changed the atmosphere. City had taken the lead at Old Trafford, and they looked entirely comfortable with it.
