Sunderland’s Premier League history has featured record-breaking promotions, prolific goalscorers, dramatic derby victories, repeated relegation escapes and a long journey through the English football pyramid.
The Black Cats first reached the Premier League in 1996, four years after the competition was established. Their opening campaign ended in immediate relegation, but Sunderland returned in 1999 after winning the second-tier title with a record points total.
Under Peter Reid, Sunderland recorded consecutive seventh-place finishes and briefly appeared capable of establishing themselves among the Premier League’s leading clubs. Kevin Phillips became the most prolific English striker in the division, while the Stadium of Light developed into one of the country’s most atmospheric grounds.
The years that followed brought several relegations and promotions. Sunderland later spent a decade continuously in the Premier League, surviving a series of dramatic battles before finally going down in 2017.
A further relegation into League One completed a remarkable decline, but Sunderland gradually rebuilt around younger players. Promotion to the Championship in 2022 was followed by a return to the Premier League in 2025 and an exceptional first season back among England’s elite.
1992: Sunderland Begin the Premier League Era Outside the Top Flight
Sunderland were not among the founding members of the Premier League.
The club began the 1992/93 season in the second tier, having finished 18th during the final campaign before the restructuring of English football.
Sunderland struggled during the early years of the new era. They finished 21st in 1992/93 and remained close to the relegation places for much of the following two seasons.
The Black Cats did produce a memorable cup run shortly before the Premier League began, reaching the 1992 FA Cup final. Liverpool won 2-0 at Wembley, denying Sunderland their first major trophy since the famous 1973 FA Cup triumph.
League performances remained inconsistent, and the club required a new direction.
