Terence Crawford is seemingly considering a return to boxing despite a year of content retirement, and the first name he called on was Ryan Garcia.
‘Bud’ Crawford hung up the gloves as an undefeated champion in five divisions, undisputed in three, off the back of a legacy-defining victory over Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Despite consistently stating that he has nothing left to prove and is happy in retirement, the 39-year-old switch-hitter last night took to X to say he was considering one more fight.
Later, he specifically targeted Garcia, asking him if he was willing to make it happen at 160lbs.
The pair have had an ongoing rivalry for some time now, with Garcia attempting to goad Crawford back through the ropes with criticisms of his record.
Responding to the call out, the current WBC welterweight world champion said:
“Do you really need to get beat up? Stop the yapping, send an offer or shut up. Simple. Your people know my people.”
Garcia won his first world title with a wide points victory over Mario Barrios. He defended the belt against Conor Benn in September, blasting the Brit out inside two rounds.
As a result, ‘King Ry’s stock in the sport is as high as ever, and, other than the weight, makes him perhaps the ideal fighter for Crawford to return against.
Despite that, many fans will feel the fight remains unrealistic, and that this back-and-forth will fizzle like many others in the sport. Crawford later said he would be willing to fight Floyd Mayweather – a man Garcia has also been connected with in recent weeks.
