Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has slammed Tottenham Hotspur duo Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur for one poor action against the Reds in midweek.
Having finished 17th in the last two Premier League campaigns, the Lilywhites decided to splash a huge amount of money this summer to overhaul the squad and hand Roberto De Zerbi the necessary tools to achieve success this season.
However, Spurs have endured a dire start, failing to score a goal in the league thus far. Having accumulated only two points from four league matches, they are currently languishing 17th in the table.
On the other hand, following a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup third-round fixture in midweek, the North London club have now been knocked out of this competition.
Now, speaking on ITV after the game, Fowler said (via Metro) that although Liverpool weren’t at their best vs Spurs, the victory was important following a disappointing result against Fulham last weekend.
However, he said that Tottenham’s defending during Gakpo’s goal was very poor as their midfield duo Bergvall and Bentancur were static and didn’t even challenge Gakpo properly.
Fowler said:
“There are too many Tottenham players standing around. You know when Gakpo has the ball that he’s going to cut inside but you see Bergvall and you see Bentancur just standing there. Just go across and make his job harder.”

Tottenham decided to upgrade the midfield department by purchasing Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali this summer. However, De Zerbi decided to rotate his options for midweek’s Carabao Cup fixture.
Bergvall came close to leaving the club this summer to play regularly and develop his career, but Tottenham ultimately decided to keep hold of him. Recently, he signed a fresh term until 2031.
Although the 20-year-old is a highly talented player and possesses the potential to reach the top, he is seemingly not ready to play at the highest level consistently yet.
Bentancur, on the other hand, has had numerous fitness problems over the years but has been featuring regularly under De Zerbi this season.
