Premier League clubs have once again established themselves as the dominant financial force in European football, spending more on transfers this summer than any other domestic competition.
Across Europe’s five major leagues, clubs have committed approximately £5.3 billion to transfers during the 2026 summer window. The Premier League accounts for more than half of that amount, with spending by England’s 20 top-flight clubs now estimated at around £2.75 billion.
By comparison, the combined expenditure of clubs in La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 is approximately £2.55 billion.
In simple terms, one league has spent more than the other four major European competitions put together.
Europe’s Estimated Transfer Spending by League
Based on reported and disclosed fees, spending across Europe’s five leading leagues is estimated to be:
Premier League: Approximately £2.75 billion
Serie A: Approximately £750 million
Bundesliga: Approximately £700 million
La Liga: Approximately £600 million
Ligue 1: Approximately £450 million
The exact figures vary between transfer trackers because certain fees remain undisclosed, some deals include performance-related additions and others are recorded differently depending on loan obligations or exchange rates.
Nevertheless, the overall picture is unmistakable. The Premier League exists in a different financial category from the rest of Europe.
The Premier League Accounts for More Than Half of the Market
Premier League clubs are responsible for approximately 52 per cent of all transfer spending across Europe’s major five leagues this summer.
That is an extraordinary share for a single competition containing only 20 clubs.
The average Premier League club has committed close to £138 million to transfers. Across the other four major leagues, the estimated average is closer to £33 million per club.
That means the average Premier League side has spent more than four times as much as its equivalent elsewhere in Europe.
