The Premier League training ground car park is a motoring exhibition with shin pads. One space contains a family-friendly SUV, the next has a limited-edition Ferrari, and somewhere near the entrance is a customised Mercedes van containing more technology than some television studios.
Cars have long been part of football culture. The difference today is the scale. Premier League players can afford vehicles that are produced in tiny numbers, extensively customised and, in some cases, worth more than an average home.
Not every footballer chooses the loudest supercar available. Some want speed, others prefer comfort and several appear to select their vehicles primarily by asking whether they can fit six friends and an enormous television inside.
So, who is driving what?
Erling Haaland: A Collection as Powerful as the Driver
Erling Haaland has been associated with one of the Premier League’s most valuable car collections.
The Manchester City striker reportedly owns vehicles worth more than £3.5 million collectively. The standout is a Ferrari 812 Competizione Aperta, a limited-production convertible powered by a naturally aspirated V12 engine. Examples have reportedly sold for more than £1.5 million, making it considerably more exclusive than the typical footballer’s supercar.
Haaland has also been linked with a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Lamborghini Urus, Aston Martin DBX, Range Rover Sport and Mercedes-Benz GLE. The collection covers most of football’s essential motoring categories: the supercar, the luxury SUV and the practical performance estate.
One of his more understated choices is the Audi RS6 Avant. “Understated” is relative, because the RS6 is an extremely powerful performance car capable of carrying passengers, luggage and a significant amount of shopping at very high speed. Its estimated average used value was approximately £82,000 in research published by Auto Trader.
It may be the most appropriate car in football. Like Haaland, it is large, unusually fast and somehow more practical than it initially appears.
