Newcastle United set to battle Real Madrid in the race for €60m midfielder

Nico Gonzalez has emerged as a live option in the market, with Caught Offside reporting that Newcastle United have made checks on the Manchester City midfielder as they reshape their squad before the new Premier League season.

The 24-year-old joined City from Porto in February 2025 for €60 million, yet his situation already appears open to change. Gonzalez is under contract until 2029, although his current valuation is said to be around €40 million. There is also interest from Spain, where Real Madrid are assessing alternatives after missing out on Rodri.

Newcastle United enter Nico Gonzalez race

According to the report, “the Magpies have opened exploratory talks with City”, with no formal offer submitted at this stage. Newcastle are understood to see Gonzalez as “a potential replacement for Tonali and Guimarães, who both departed earlier in the window”. That context alone explains why this is one to watch closely.

There is a further detail that sharpens the picture. “Manager Enzo Maresca’s decision to give the midfielder only 11 minutes in the Community Shield against Arsenal further highlighted his limited role at the Etihad.” Selection can often say plenty at this stage of the calendar, particularly when a player is weighing up where his pathway lies.

Real Madrid interest adds pressure

Real Madrid have “added González to their shortlist and are also weighing up Adam Wharton”. That means Newcastle are unlikely to get a free run if they decide to move beyond early discussions. City’s asking price “remains unclear, but negotiations are expected to start around his €40 million valuation”.

The key point may be the simplest one: “The midfielder needs to play regularly at this stage of his career.” For Newcastle, that could be the strongest part of their pitch if they accelerate this deal.
