Newcastle United ready to cut ties with struggling star

Newcastle United have reached a firm position on Nick Woltemade, with the forward expected to remain at Juventus for the rest of the season despite a slow start in Turin. According to TeamTalk, there is no appetite at St James’ Park to revisit the decision that sent him to Serie A, and no straightforward mechanism for Juventus to cut the move short in January.

The key point is simple. Newcastle have “no plans for Nick Woltemade to return to the club in January” and Juventus “cannot simply cancel his loan”. In practical terms, that leaves the 24-year-old with one route for the months ahead, stay put, compete, and try to force his way into the picture in black and white in Italy.

It is a situation that says plenty about Newcastle’s summer thinking and about how quickly Woltemade’s chances on Tyneside faded once changes were made in the dugout.

Woltemade loan decision made early

Newcastle’s summer was shaped by transition, with Matthias Jaissle coming in and bringing a different tactical brief. Early on, there had been a sense that Woltemade might benefit from that. As reported, “Jaissle has regularly used a system incorporating a No.10, which appeared to offer Woltemade an obvious route into his plans.”

That opening did not last. TeamTalk’s information suggests “it quickly became clear that Woltemade was not considered the right fit for Jaissle’s system, with questions also raised over his willingness to adapt to the demands of the new regime.” From there, the direction of travel was set. “His future at St James’ Park was effectively decided early in the summer.”

Newcastle then pressed ahead with other attacking business. The pursuit of Matias Fernandez-Pardo was important in that process, because once that deal was advanced, room was created for Woltemade to depart. He eventually chose Juventus after interest from multiple clubs in the latter stages of the window.
