Newcastle could be set for £30m full-back move

Marcus Rashford’s situation is moving towards another significant point, with the Manchester United forward expected to speak to Michael Carrick after the club’s pre-season fixture in Dublin. According to Mirror, Rashford remains open to leaving Old Trafford and the sense around his future is that a clean break still appeals to all parties, even if the route to that outcome is far from straightforward.

The key detail is that Rashford still wants an exit. That has not changed, despite his return to Carrington for pre-season work. His immediate position is complicated by market conditions, by United’s stance on potential destinations and by the financial reality of any agreement. Internally, there is still a desire to remove his salary from the wage bill, while the player himself appears to feel that too much has happened for a straightforward reset at his boyhood club.

Where this becomes especially interesting is in the limits around his next move. A stay in the Premier League looks difficult. United are not prepared to sanction a sale to direct rivals such as Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester City, while temporary moves involving Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham have effectively been discounted. There is an obvious football reason behind that thinking, with United reluctant to strengthen competitors who could benefit directly from Rashford’s quality over the course of the season.

That leaves the market abroad as the most realistic avenue, particularly after Barcelona chose not to convert his previous arrangement into a permanent transfer. Rashford had hoped that path might reopen, but Barcelona have gone in a different direction and moved for Anthony Gordon instead. As a result, the forward is left assessing his options in a narrower field than he may have anticipated at the start of the summer.
