Former Liverpool striker turned pundit Michael Owen has slammed his old club’s defender Milos Kerkez for his poor performances.
After moving to Anfield from Hull City, Andrew Robertson was an undisputed starter in the left-back position. However, he displayed signs of decline during the 2024/25 campaign, although the Reds won the Premier League title.
After being impressed by the Hungarian international’s performances for AFC Bournemouth, Liverpool decided to purchase him last year as a potential long-term replacement for the Scottish international.
However, Kerkez has struggled to perform at his best at Anfield. In 48 appearances across all competitions, he made four goal contributions and kept just six clean sheets last term.
This season, the 22-year-old has kept a solitary clean sheet in six matches in all tournaments. Now, during a recent interview (via TEAMtalk), Owen says that Liverpool have issues in the fullback positions, with Conor Bradley’s fitness problems apparent.
On the other hand, Jeremie Frimpong isn’t a natural defender; instead, he is more comfortable in the advanced role. Kostas Tsimikas, meanwhile, isn’t good enough to play regularly for Liverpool.
The former striker further states that Kerkez has struggled since joining, as he looks nervous and the red shirt looks heavy on him.
Owen said:
“Kerkez has struggled since being there. He looks nervous and lost in the red shirt and it looks heavy on him. I think the two full-backs are a problem.”
Pundit slams Kerkez
Kerkez is an attack-minded left-back and can provide cover on the RWB position if needed. He is quick, can make surging runs from deep, and is efficient in delivering excellent crosses from the flanks.
After moving to Vitality Stadium from AZ Alkmaar, the youngster showcased his qualities, scoring twice and registering five assists in 41 appearances across all competitions. He even helped his side keep 10 clean sheets.
However, for some reason, he hasn’t been able to replicate that for Liverpool. Nevertheless, Kerkez is still very young and has plenty of time to turn the situation around and reach his full potential.
