Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has moved towards Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde, with contact made as the club continues to reshape key areas of the squad before the transfer window closes. Balde is now firmly in that conversation. The 22-year-old is understood to have been discussed during talks with his agent Jorge Mendes on Thursday, as United assess whether a deal can be struck in time. From Barcelona’s perspective, the situation appears open. The Spain international came through the academy and still carries significant upside, but uncertainty around his standing has created an opportunity for interested clubs.

Balde featured prominently during Barcelona’s title-winning campaign, starting 21 league matches and another 10 across European and domestic cup competitions. There were interruptions caused by hamstring and muscle problems, with 10 matches missed through injury, and that factor will naturally form part of any due diligence from United.

That has altered the picture around Balde’s pathway to regular starts.
