Manchester United’s long-term thinking around the head coach position has come back into focus, with TeamTalk reporting that Fabian Hurzeler remains a figure of real admiration inside Old Trafford. The key line is significant, Jason Wilcox is a “confirmed admirer” of the Brighton boss, and that alone tells you this is not idle noise.
United have made their decision for now by appointing Michael Carrick on a permanent basis, and there is no indication of an immediate shift from that stance. Even so, well-run clubs track elite coaching talent continuously, and Hurzeler’s name clearly stayed active in those discussions. According to the report, he “was firmly under consideration before the Old Trafford hierarchy decided to appoint Michael Carrick on a permanent basis”.
That matters because it frames Hurzeler not as a speculative outsider, but as someone already seriously assessed in the context of Manchester United’s biggest role. Sources also indicate he “would be among their leading options should they decide to make another change in the dugout”. For any coach, that is a substantial endorsement.

Fabian Hurzeler admiration at Man Utd runs deep
Hurzeler has quickly built a strong reputation in England. Brighton’s faith in him has been evident since he arrived in 2024 to replace Roberto De Zerbi, and the club’s internal conviction appears only to have strengthened. He became the youngest manager in Premier League history and has delivered stability alongside progress, guiding Brighton to consecutive eighth-place finishes before an excellent opening to the current season.
The latest campaign has added further weight to his credentials. Brighton are described as having made “an impressive opening to the season”, including a major win over Arsenal, while also starting well in Europe. When a young coach produces that blend of league consistency, tactical clarity and upward momentum, the biggest clubs inevitably take notice.
