Manchester United are reportedly in advanced talks with Atalanta over a fee worth around £38m, structured as £35m guaranteed and £3m in add ons. Sky Sports report that a full agreement could be reached by the end of the week, which suggests this is no speculative summer flutter.
Ederson has long looked like the sort of midfielder United have lacked. He is powerful without being lumbering, combative without being reckless, and technically secure enough to operate in tight areas. For a side that has too often looked stretched through the middle, those qualities matter.
Atalanta manager Raffaele Palladino added intrigue last week when explaining why Ederson remained an unused substitute against Fiorentina, saying a “major club” was following him. That club now appears to be United.
