Manchester United have reportedly expressed their interest in signing Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, as per TEAMtalk.
The Red Devils currently have Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee as specialist striker options. However, the Dutchman has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League since joining from Bologna a couple of years ago.
On the other hand, Seako showed glimpses of his qualities last campaign but has been struggling with fitness problems this season. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo can provide cover in the CF position if needed, but they are more comfortable on the flanks.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that Man Utd are planning to cash-in on Zirkzee next year and are interested in signing a new striker to replace the former Bayern Munich forward.
The Old Trafford club hold a long-standing interest in Mateta and are considering signing him in January by taking advantage of his current situation.
The 29-year-old has been keen on leaving Crystal Palace for a long time, and his representatives have made contact with United over a transfer, with his existing deal set to expire at the end of this season.
The report state that apart from Man Utd, Saudi Arabian clubs have also expressed their interest in him, but the Frenchman is keen on a move to Old Trafford.
Mateta to Man Utd
Mateta is a 6ft 4in tall right-footed striker. He is strong, good in the air, efficient in holding up the play and can finish off his chances. Moreover, he works hard without possession.
The forward has enjoyed a successful time at Selhurst Park in recent years, winning a Conference League, FA Cup and Community Shield.
However, he has found himself on the periphery this season, with fitness problems being one of the key reasons. But Mateta has proven his goal-scoring prowess in the Premier League in recent years.
He is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, the Crystal Palace star could be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Man Utd eventually make a move to sign Mateta, valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt, in January or next…..
