Manchester United’s summer has already carried the unmistakable signs of reconstruction, but the club’s pursuit of a third midfield signing suggests the work is still more architectural than decorative. According to Sky Sports, Roma’s Manu Kone and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba are now “strongly considered” as United continue to shape the engine room of Michael Carrick’s side.
That matters because midfield, more than any other department, determines the emotional temperature of a team. It decides whether a side can control space, survive transitions and impose rhythm. United have already added Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos for a combined £85m, but the search has not stopped there. Instead, it has become more nuanced, a question of profile as much as pedigree.
Baleba and Kone Fit Different Midfield Needs
Sky Sports report that United have “made movement in revisiting a potential deal” for Baleba, even after what was described as a difficult previous season. That persistence is revealing. Clubs do not retain interest in a player through a dip in form unless they are convinced by the structure beneath it, the athleticism, the positional intelligence, the capacity to recover his level in a better collective setting.

There is, though, a practical complication. “No official club-to-club contact has been made yet,” and “a compromise around the player’s valuation would need to be found.” Brighton, as ever, know the worth of elite potential and tend to sell only on terms they dictate.
Kone, by contrast, appears to offer a slightly different kind of opportunity. Sky Sports state that United have “tentatively explored what a deal could look like” for the Roma midfielder, while “the Italian club’s demands” are “not expected to be as high as Brighton’s.” In a market where value is increasingly elusive, that phrase alone has significance.
