Manchester United’s summer rebuild is moving into a more focused phase, with the midfield picture becoming clearer as financial discipline shapes decisions at Old Trafford. According to TeamTalk, United have effectively cooled their interest in both Carlos Baleba and Alex Scott, while Fulham’s Sander Berge is emerging as a serious and more attainable option for INEOS.

The direction of travel says plenty about how the club are now operating. United have already added Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, and the intention remains to complete a broader midfield overhaul after Casemiro’s exit and with Manuel Ugarte expected to miss a significant part of the campaign due to a serious knee injury suffered at the World Cup. The need is obvious, but so is the strategy. This is a recruitment process driven by valuation as much as profile.
Midfield rebuild shaped by valuation
There is little doubt that Baleba has admirers inside the club. TeamTalk reports that if budget were no obstacle, he would be the preferred choice to round out the midfield rebuild. The issue is straightforward, Brighton’s demands place him beyond what United currently consider sensible business.
Graeme Bailey explained the thinking clearly: “What I am hearing is they want someone who can really help them defensively.” He then added, “In an ideal world they’d just sign Carlos Baleba. They absolutely love his game. Yes, he didn’t have his best season, but they still believe he’d be an outstanding fit for Manchester United.”

That appreciation has not disappeared, but the numbers have proved prohibitive. Bailey said: “United believe Baleba is worth somewhere around the £50m mark, especially after what they considered an inconsistent campaign.
