Man United Close-In On Premier League Midfielder

Manchester United’s summer has carried the air of a club trying to restore order to its centre. According to The Athletic, United and Brighton are “closing in on a deal for midfielder Carlos Baleba”, a move that feels revealing as much as it does practical. It says plenty about the type of side Michael Carrick wants to build, and about where United believe modern control is won.

The proposed package, “around £60million (€70m, $81m) plus £5m in add-ons”, has not yet reached Brighton’s comfort zone, with the offer “felt to be below what Brighton would be seeking to sell”. Still, “amicable talks continue”, which is often the truest sign that a transfer is alive. Football negotiation tends to be theatre until both sides decide it no longer needs to be.

Baleba arrives in this conversation with context attached. The 22-year-old is “currently working his way back to fitness after an ankle ligament injury” though “the issue is not considered serious or expected to keep him out long-term”. In other words, United are not buying fragility, they are buying profile, age and possibility.

Should Baleba arrive, he would join Tielemans, Santos, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes among United’s primary options.
