Liverpool’s squad contains enough elite talent to compete with any team in the Premier League, but depth is about more than the quality of a club’s preferred starting line-up.
A deep squad needs reliable alternatives in every position, tactical variety from the bench and enough experienced players to manage injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion. That becomes particularly important when a club is balancing Premier League football with domestic cups and the Champions League.
Liverpool’s 2026/27 group offers outstanding options in goal, central defence and attack. However, the balance is less convincing at full-back and in defensive midfield. Several players are also returning from serious injuries, meaning the size of the squad on paper does not always reflect the number of options immediately available.
Goalkeeper Is Liverpool’s Deepest Position
Liverpool possess one of the strongest goalkeeping groups in the Premier League.
Alisson Becker remains the established first choice, offering elite shot-stopping, distribution and the ability to defend the space behind Liverpool’s back line. His presence allows the team to maintain an aggressive defensive position because he is comfortable leaving his penalty area to deal with passes played behind the centre-backs.
Giorgi Mamardashvili provides a particularly strong alternative. He is capable of starting Premier League and Champions League matches without forcing Liverpool to make a major tactical adjustment.
Freddie Woodman adds experience, while Vít?zslav Jaroš gives Liverpool another senior option once he recovers from his knee injury. There may be questions elsewhere, but goalkeeper is not an area in which Liverpool lack numbers or quality.
Greater Depth at Centre-Back
