Leeds United’s Premier League history is a story of ambition, spectacular football, financial collapse and determined recovery.
The club entered the Premier League as the reigning English champions, having won the final First Division title in 1991/92. Leeds later developed one of the country’s most exciting young teams, reached the Champions League semi-finals and appeared ready to become a permanent member of the elite.
That progress unravelled with alarming speed. Excessive spending, failed Champions League qualification and mounting debts contributed to relegation in 2004. Leeds subsequently fell into League One and spent 16 years outside the Premier League.
Marcelo Bielsa eventually restored the club to the top flight in 2020. Another relegation followed three seasons later, but Leeds returned as Championship winners in 2025 before successfully securing Premier League survival.

1991/92: Leeds Become the Final First Division Champions
Leeds entered the Premier League era as champions of England.
Howard Wilkinson had rebuilt the club after taking charge in 1988. Leeds won promotion from the Second Division in 1989/90 before finishing fourth during their first season back in the top flight.
The squad combined experience, physical strength and technical quality. Gordon Strachan captained the team, while Gary McAllister, David Batty and Gary Speed formed an exceptional midfield.
John Lukic provided experience in goal, Tony Dorigo contributed from left-back and Lee Chapman scored important goals in attack. The arrival of Eric Cantona during the second half of the campaign added further creativity.
Leeds finished four points above Manchester United to win the 1991/92 First Division championship. It was the club’s third English league title and made them the reigning champions when the Premier League launched.
