There was never a moment when John McGinn arrived in the Premier League with superstar hype.
He was not a £100 million signing. He was not described as a generational talent coming through a glamorous academy. He did not have the profile of a future global star.
Instead, McGinn’s rise has been built on something far more difficult to sustain over time: relentless improvement.
Today, the Aston Villa captain is regarded as one of the Premier League’s most complete and reliable midfielders, and one of the best Scottish Premier League players of all time. His energy, leadership, aggression and technical quality have made him indispensable for both club and country, while his personality and work ethic have turned him into a fan favourite everywhere he has played.
What makes McGinn’s story so compelling is that his career has never followed a predictable path. Every step forward had to be earned.

That season ended with one of the biggest moments of his early career when St Mirren won the 2013 Scottish League Cup. McGinn played the first 81 minutes of the final as St Mirren defeated Hearts 3–2.
Winning a major trophy so early shaped his mentality. McGinn learned quickly that success in football is built on intensity, resilience and consistency.
But his journey was far from smooth.
During the 2014–15 season, St Mirren struggled badly and were relegated from the Scottish Premiership. McGinn later admitted that he had performed poorly during that campaign and had become distracted by transfer speculation linking him with English clubs.
