James Trafford’s Excellent Start Raises a Serious Question: Should He Be England’s Number One?

James Trafford has gone from a promising young goalkeeper to a genuine contender for England’s number-one shirt.

After eight Premier League games for Leeds United in 2026/27, Trafford has conceded only six goals, kept three clean sheets and made 30 saves. Leeds have lost just once with him in goal, collecting two wins and five draws while establishing one of the division’s strongest defensive records.

Those numbers alone do not settle the argument. Jordan Pickford has years of international experience and an impressive record at major tournaments. However, Trafford’s performances have made this a real selection debate rather than a hypothetical one.

Trafford’s start to the season in numbers

Trafford has played every minute of Leeds’ opening eight Premier League matches, completing 720 minutes and helping his side concede just 0.75 goals per game.

His early-season league record reads:

Eight appearances

720 minutes

Six goals conceded

Three clean sheets

30 saves

83.3 per cent save rate

3.75 saves per 90 minutes

One goal conceded every 120 minutes

Two wins, five draws and one defeat

No errors directly leading to a goal

An average performance rating of approximately 7.2

Only two teams had conceded fewer Premier League goals after eight rounds, while Trafford ranked among the leading goalkeepers for both saves and save percentage. Leeds’ defensive record was particularly impressive given that he had faced 36 shots on target, making his numbers about much more than an organised defence protecting its goalkeeper.

Different data providers classify shots and saves slightly differently, but the overall picture is consistent. Trafford has saved more than four out of every five shots on target and prevented Leeds from conceding several goals beyond what the quality of those chances would normally suggest.

His record also represents a dramatic improvement on his first extended Premier League season. At Burnley in 2023/24, Trafford conceded 62 goals in 28 appearances, an average of 2.21 per game. He made 106 saves but kept only two clean sheets.

At Leeds, he is currently conceding around 1.46 fewer…
