At the time, it was a major statement from Hull. Mason arrived with Premier League experience, technical quality and the profile of a midfielder who could immediately improve the team’s level.

Tragically, his playing career was cut short after suffering a serious head injury while playing for Hull against Chelsea in January 2017. Because of that, his time on the pitch at the MKM Stadium was heartbreakingly brief, but his transfer still stands as the biggest financial commitment in the club’s history.

2. Abel Hernandez, Palermo: around £10m

Abel Hernandez joined Hull from Palermo in 2014 for around £10m, becoming the club’s record signing at the time.

The Uruguayan striker arrived with a strong reputation and international pedigree. Hull were looking for a forward who could add pace, movement and finishing quality, and Hernandez looked like a major attacking upgrade.

His time at the club had ups and downs, but he produced some memorable moments, particularly in the Championship. His best scoring spell helped Hull push back towards the Premier League, making him one of the most significant attacking signings in the club’s modern history.
