Hull City look to be moving with a bit more intent in the market, and that alone will catch the eye of supporters who have spent enough summers waiting for something concrete. According to Daily Mail, the Tigers are “closing on the signing of former Newcastle United left-back Matt Targett” in a deal that feels practical, experienced and, above all, sensible.
Targett, now 30, is a free agent after time with Newcastle and a loan spell at Middlesbrough last season. The report adds that he “has had interest from West Ham and Norwich City”, which suggests Hull are not simply picking up a discarded option. They are moving quickly on a player with Championship and Premier League pedigree. Better still, he is “expected to undergo a medical prior to signing a two year deal and will join Sergej Jakirovic’s squad for their pre-season training camp in Slovenia, which begins on Monday.” That matters. Getting bodies in early is basic squad building, but plenty of clubs still get it wrong.
There is more at left-back, too. The Mail report that “Hull remain on course to sign Sweden international left-back Elliot Stroud from Mjallby for £3m too.” On the face of it, that points to a clear attempt to reshape one side of the defence with a mix of reliability and upside. One established option, one developing one, and a manager who gets them in before the serious work starts.
Matt Targett Move Makes Immediate Sense
Targett is not glamorous, and that is fine. Hull do not need glamour at left-back, they need availability, calmness and someone who understands positioning. If he arrives fit, this is the sort of signing that can stabilise a team over 46 matches. There is no mystery here, and no need to overcomplicate it.
