Gervonta Davis’ team responds to Lomachenko targeting him for comeback fight

A fight between Gervonta Davis and Vasyl Lomachenko could be finally be on the cards now that the latter has announced his comeback to the sport.

‘Tank’ and ‘Loma’ have been linked to a clash for several years, and were even in negotiations before the three-division world champion from Ukraine announced his retirement last June.

The Ring Magazine has now reported that Lomachenko is making a return to the ring and that he plans on taking ‘no tune-ups’, first eyeing a shot at unified super-featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete, before a long-awaited 135lb affair with ‘Tank’.

However, speaking with MillCity Boxing, Kenny Ellis, a key member of Davis’ coaching team, believes it is all talk.

“No, I think that ‘Tank’ will be the last one that he picks.”

“He is the most dangerous one. He is going to take, I am not going to say the easy route, but the [one with] less punishment. He is going to go that way.

“All of them [lightweight] guys right now, s**t, they can crack, all of ‘em. So, it is just up to him, which one he wants to get KO’d by.”

Should the fight materialise, Ellis says it will be for purely financial reasons.

“No, [it wouldn’t surprise me if he chose to fight Davis], that is the biggest payday. It wouldn’t surprise me, but do he really want the fight, or do he want it for the money?”

Davis is currently being linked to a super-lightweight rematch with Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, as he seeks his first win since June 2024. He has dominated the headlines recently not for his boxing, but controversy and legal proceedings outside of the ropes.
