Sunderland secured a vital 1-0 victory over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, with Enzo Le Fee’s first-half penalty providing a much-needed boost for Regis Le Bris and his struggling side.
The Black Cats entered Sunday’s Premier League encounter without a league victory since August, but produced a disciplined and determined performance to frustrate Chelsea and claim three valuable points in their battle against relegation.
For Chelsea, defeat represented another damaging setback in an increasingly inconsistent campaign. Having beaten Manchester United 2-0 in their previous league outing, the visitors missed an opportunity to climb into the Premier League’s top four.
Le Fee Penalty Gives Sunderland First-Half Advantage
Chelsea began with greater possession, but Sunderland demonstrated an early willingness to attack, with Brian Brobbey proving particularly troublesome for the visitors’ defence.
The Dutch striker almost opened the scoring when he met Chemsdine Talbi’s delivery, directing a header narrowly wide of Mike Penders’ goal.
Chelsea responded through Morgan Rogers, who squandered a promising opportunity when he headed wide despite finding himself unmarked inside the penalty area.
Controversy emerged in the 25th minute when Cole Palmer went down following a challenge from Luke O’Nien. Chelsea appealed for a penalty, but a VAR review determined that the initial contact had occurred outside the Sunderland penalty area.
Eleven minutes later, the hosts received a penalty of their own.

Referee Jarred Gillett penalised Levi Colwill for pulling Brobbey to the ground as the Sunderland striker advanced towards goal. The decision prompted frustration among Chelsea’s players, with both men appearing to grapple during the incident.
Le Fee remained composed, sending Penders the wrong way from 12 yards to establish a 1-0 advantage after 36 minutes.
