Manchester United may be heading for another managerial change, and if Eddie Howe is the leading candidate then this is not simply about picking a name off a shortlist. It is about structure, control and whether the club are finally ready to let a head coach work on proper terms.
According to Standard Sport, Michael Carrick is under severe pressure after back-to-back defeats to Como and Bournemouth, with his position looking increasingly vulnerable. The report says Carrick is expected to be sacked this week, and that Howe is the first-choice option for club chief James Wilcox. Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann are also mentioned, but Howe is the name that stands out because his demands are already well established.

This is the key point. Howe has made clear in the past that he wants trusted staff around him. That is not ego, it is practicality. He explained his thinking in 2022, saying: “I felt that if I was to come into a pressured job like [Celtic], I needed to go in with a sense of stability.
“I could have recruited new staff, but then you’re working each other out and there’s a transition process where it probably takes three, four, five months. That’s five months too late. I needed my staff with me and we couldn’t get them together.”
That is blunt and logical. At a club where scrutiny is relentless and patience is thin, Howe does not want a slow start caused by internal compromise.
