Manchester United have spent much of this season searching for evidence that their revival under Michael Carrick possesses genuine substance. On a remarkable Champions League evening at Old Trafford, they found something to believe in.
A dramatic 3-2 victory over Roma ended Man United’s nine-match winless run, with Matheus Cunha scoring twice late on to complete a comeback that had seemed improbable during a dreadful opening period.
For Carrick, the result offered both encouragement and considerable cause for concern. His side demonstrated resilience, attacking ambition and renewed confidence after the interval. Yet the defensive vulnerabilities that threatened to undermine their European campaign remain painfully obvious.
Roma Expose Man United Defensive Weaknesses
Roma required just 11 minutes to establish control. Kobbie Mainoo surrendered possession in midfield, allowing Matias Soule to exploit the space behind Diogo Dalot and finish confidently beyond Senne Lammens.
United’s defensive organisation deteriorated further when Soule again found himself unmarked. His subsequent effort struck Ayden Heaven’s arm, presenting Donyell Malen with the opportunity to double Roma’s advantage from the penalty spot.
Never before had Man United conceded twice so quickly in a European fixture at Old Trafford.
Dalot’s positioning was particularly troubling. His repeated ventures forward left Heaven covering considerable ground, while Harry Maguire struggled to organise a defensive unit increasingly vulnerable to Roma’s movement.
Bruno Fernandes eventually provided some relief. Having initially seen his penalty saved, the Portuguese midfielder benefited from defensive encroachment and converted the retake.
Even so, the boos accompanying United’s departure at half-time reflected the frustration surrounding another disjointed performance.
