Coventry City have agreed a deal to sign Ethan Pinnock from Brentford, and on the face of it this is straightforward enough. The newly-promoted club are paying £5m up front, with £1m in add-ons, for a defender who brings know-how, physical presence and plenty of Premier League mileage. As reported by The Athletic, “Coventry City have agreed a £6million deal to sign Brentford centre-back Ethan Pinnock.”
There is little mystery around the logic. Coventry need experience at the back, they need leaders, and they need players who understand what survival demands. Pinnock ticks those boxes. The 33-year-old “has been given permission to travel for a medical ahead of the proposed move” and the agreement would keep him at the club for three years, with “the option of a further 12 months.”
Ethan Pinnock brings proven Premier League pedigree
Pinnock’s Brentford career deserves proper context. He joined from Barnsley in 2019 and went on to make 216 appearances, scoring 12 goals and adding seven assists. More importantly, he was central to their rise, “playing a key role in their 2020-21 promotion campaign from the Championship.” That matters for a club like Coventry, because promotion specialists often understand the next step better than glamorous signings do.
There is, of course, a reason Brentford are willing to let him go. In recent seasons “he has lost his place in the starting XI” and “featuring in only eight matches last term, four of which came in the league.” Those numbers are not ideal, and no one should pretend otherwise.
