Hull City are back in the Premier League, and with that comes all the usual optimism: packed away ends, heavyweight fixtures, and the thrill of seeing the Tigers back on Match of the Day. But beneath the excitement sits a more uncomfortable question.
Could Hull be so outmatched next season that they threaten Derby County’s infamous 11-point Premier League record?
It sounds dramatic. It might even sound unfair. Hull have earned their return, winning promotion through the Championship play-offs and ending a long absence from the top flight. Yet the Premier League has become increasingly brutal for newly promoted sides, and Hull’s route up — combined with financial pressure, squad uncertainty and a punishing fixture list — makes this a question worth asking.
The Derby Benchmark
Derby County’s 2007/08 campaign remains the Premier League’s ultimate cautionary tale. They finished with just 11 points from 38 games, winning once all season, drawing eight and losing 29.
That record has survived for nearly two decades because even the weakest Premier League teams usually stumble into a few wins somewhere. A home upset, a late-season dead rubber, a chaotic six-pointer — something normally happens.
Southampton came closest in 2024/25, finishing with 12 points, but even they managed to avoid taking the record outright. That near-miss is a reminder: Derby’s mark is low, but not untouchable.
For Hull to break it, they would need to finish on 10 points or fewer. That likely means no more than two wins all season, or one win paired with a handful of draws. It is extreme — but the modern Premier League has made extreme failure more plausible than it used to be.
Why Hull Are Being Mentioned at All
