Chelsea have spent long enough in recent years treating squad building as a kind of rolling experiment, a process of constant refreshment in which almost every player can be recast as tradeable. That is what makes the latest developments around Trevoh Chalobah feel so telling. According to talkSPORT, Como are now “in advanced talks” to sign the defender after making a “£26million offer”, a move that appears to be gathering pace at precisely the moment Chelsea’s defensive hierarchy is shifting again.
The report states that Cesc Fabregas, now shaping an ambitious Como side, has made Chalobah “a major target” this summer. It is already the Italian club’s third attempt. In June, Como saw “a bid worth more than £22million” rejected, and while the latest proposal remains shy of Chelsea’s valuation, there is a sense that the gap is bridgeable rather than prohibitive.
Chalobah transfer talks gather pace
Ben Jacobs reports that Chelsea want “around £30m plus £5m in add-ons” for their academy graduate. The number itself is significant, but so too is the language around the deal. Negotiations are “now set to accelerate over the weekend”, which tends to be how transfers sound when the broad outlines are already understood by both parties.
This, in truth, has the feel of a transfer enabled by circumstance as much as desire. Chelsea are “prepared to sell Chalobah”, and that willingness seems closely connected to their move for Maxence Lacroix. The Crystal Palace defender is “expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge in a deal worth north of £55m”, and his arrival would inevitably alter the depth chart.
