Chelsea have reportedly set their sights on signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, as per Football Insider.
The Dutchman came into the spotlight after displaying excellent performances for Ajax Amsterdam. Having been impressed by him, the Blaugrana decided to purchase him back in 2019.
The 29-year-old has enjoyed a successful time at Camp Nou, winning three La Liga titles and a few domestic cup competitions over the years. However, he has struggled with fitness problems in recent times and has been out injured since the start of this season.
Now, Football Insider state that De Jong is close to returning to full fitness, and Chelsea have identified him as a serious option to replace Enzo Fernandez.
After letting the South American join Manchester City, the Blues attempted to buy Lamine Camara on deadline day but AS Monaco ultimately blocked the move. So, they aren’t planning to revive their interest in him and have shifted focus to alternative options.
However, the report state that with De Jong remaining a key part of Barcelona and his existing deal set to run until 2029, Barcelona don’t want to part ways with him.
Chelsea will have to launch a formal proposal worth more than £50m to persuade the Spanish champions to sell him.
De Jong to Chelsea
De Jong likes to be deployed in the box-to-box role but is also comfortable in the deep-lying playmaker position. Furthermore, he previously provided cover in the centre-back position.
The Netherlands international is quick, technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, and is efficient at threading passes between the lines.
Moreover, he is strong in defensive contributions. De Jong is a talented player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. He even possesses the necessary attributes to flourish in the Premier League.
Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Chelsea should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the West London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services next year.
