Chelsea are moving towards improved terms for Josh Acheampong after an encouraging start to the 2026-27 campaign, with the defender’s standing under Xabi Alonso continuing to rise. According to Alex Crook of talkSPORT, the club are expected to put a “bumper” new contract in front of the 20-year-old, a signal of how highly he is now valued at Stamford Bridge.
That development carries significance beyond routine squad planning. Acheampong already has a deal running until 2029, so there is no urgency in the conventional sense. Chelsea’s push is instead about recognition, protection and long-term strategy. When a club acts this early, particularly with a homegrown player, it usually reflects internal confidence that the individual is becoming central to the project.

Acheampong has started six of Chelsea’s nine matches in all competitions so far this season and has completed both Premier League fixtures since the international break, the 5-1 win over Bournemouth and the 2-0 victory against Everton. Only Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill have logged more minutes for Chelsea this term.
That level of usage matters. Selection under Alonso appears to be merit-driven, and Acheampong’s place in the side has been earned rather than handed to him. There had been previous suggestions that his future could lie away from west London, but the current picture is very different. Internally, he is now seen as one of the club’s “untouchables”, a notable shift for a player who is still only 20.
