Chelsea’s summer planning appears to be taking another intriguing turn, with David Ornstein reporting that the club are exploring a move for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck. It is the sort of link that immediately sparks debate, largely because Welbeck is now 35, and partly because it signals a notable shift in recruitment thinking at Stamford Bridge.
The key detail is straightforward enough. Chelsea are considering a move, Welbeck has only 12 months left on his Brighton contract, and Brighton know there is interest. More significantly, the report states that, “As a player and a leader, Welbeck appeals to Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso” and that “there is optimism on all sides that a deal could be done.” Even at this early stage, that sounds more serious than a passing check on availability.

For several windows, the club focused heavily on players under 25, stockpiling talent with upside and resale value. Now, the emphasis appears to be changing. He may not be the glamorous name some supporters crave, but his recent form deserves respect. Welbeck played in 37 of Brighton’s 38 Premier League games last season and scored 13 goals, the best league return of his career. Across his Brighton spell, he has delivered 51 goals in 201 appearances since arriving from Watford in 2020. That is reliable production, backed up by availability and experience.
