Chelsea are back where too many expensive squads eventually end up, looking at midfield and asking the same blunt question, who actually controls games? According to Caught Offside, internal talks at Stamford Bridge have narrowed the January discussion towards two names, Alex Scott and Adam Wharton.
That tells you plenty. Chelsea are not scrambling for a stop-gap, at least not now. They briefly considered Georginio Wijnaldum on a free after the window shut, which was a sign of how awkward the market had become, but that route was shelved. The line from inside the club is clear enough: wait, reassess, then spend heavily on the right age profile and the right fit.
One source put it plainly: “Chelsea have been discussing a few options, but the unanimous feeling at board level was to wait to see what possibilities will be there in January, with Scott and Wharton the preferred targets,” one source told me.
Alex Scott remains Chelsea’s leading midfield target
Scott has been admired for a while and that interest is not fading. Chelsea saw a bid rejected in the summer and Bournemouth were firm. No mixed messages, no room for negotiation on their terms, and certainly no appetite to lose him before 2027. Chelsea still appear ready to push again in January, even if the answer may well be the same.
It makes sense from Chelsea’s perspective. Scott fits the model, young, technically secure, versatile and with upside that justifies a major fee. The problem is that Bournemouth know exactly what they have, and they have no obvious reason to help a rival in the middle of the season.

Adam Wharton offers Chelsea another serious option
Wharton remains very much in the conversation. Chelsea like him, and there is logic to that as well. He is composed, progressive and already looks capable of dictating the tempo at Premier League level. The decision for Chelsea is straightforward, move in January or keep their powder dry and revisit the market later.
