Bigger, Faster, Stronger: How the Premier League Became More Physical Than Ever

The Premier League has always been associated with physical football, but the version on display today is markedly different from the one seen even a decade ago.

Players appear taller, stronger and more explosive. Centre-backs can chase down wingers, centre-forwards combine the frame of a traditional target man with the speed of a wide attacker, and midfielders are expected to cover large areas while repeatedly accelerating into tackles, presses and transitions.

This is not simply a visual impression. Long-term tracking data shows that Premier League football has become substantially more intense. Players are sprinting further, performing more high-speed running and producing those efforts more frequently, even though the overall distance covered per minute has changed relatively little.

The modern Premier League player is not necessarily running much more. He is running harder.

A Decade of Rising Intensity

A major study of 3,750 Premier League matches between 2015/16 and 2024/25 offers the clearest evidence of the transformation.

Across those 10 seasons, high-speed running distance increased by approximately 23 per cent, high-intensity distance rose by around 27 per cent and sprint distance increased by roughly 40 per cent. The amount of high-speed and sprint running performed per minute also rose significantly.

By contrast, total distance covered per minute decreased slightly. That tells us something important about how the competition has evolved. Matches have not simply become continuous endurance tests. Instead, they increasingly consist of repeated explosive actions separated by periods of lower-intensity movement.

Players walk, scan and reposition before abruptly accelerating to press an opponent, cover a transition or attack the space behind a defence. The physical demand comes from the force and frequency of those changes in speed, rather than from steady running alone.

Premier League Speed Is Reaching Extraordinary Levels

The league’s leading speeds provide a striking illustration of modern athleticism.
