A Proper Football Away Day at Spotland
Rochdale is one of those away days that still feels like traditional English football. The Crown Oil Arena, still known to many supporters as Spotland, is compact, characterful and close enough to the pitch to create a lively matchday atmosphere.
After Rochdale’s return to the EFL for the 2026/27 season, visiting fans are once again heading to one of the more familiar lower-league grounds in the North West. It is not the most glamorous trip on the calendar, but it is a proper football ground, with good views for away supporters, a straightforward journey by car and enough local food and drink options to make the day work.

The Stadium at a Glance
Rochdale play at the Crown Oil Arena, located in the Spotland area of Rochdale, Greater Manchester. The ground has been the club’s home for generations and has a capacity of just over 10,000.
The stadium has four main stands: the David Kilpatrick Main Stand, the Pearl Street Stand, the Sandy Lane End and the Willbutts Lane Stand. The Sandy Lane End is the traditional home terrace, while away fans are usually placed in the Willbutts Lane Stand along the side of the pitch.
The ground is shared with Rochdale Hornets rugby league club, and while it has been modernised over time, it still retains a traditional lower-league feel. That combination of decent facilities and proper football character is what makes Rochdale a popular trip for many travelling supporters.
Away Fan Allocation
Away supporters are usually housed in the Willbutts Lane Stand, which runs along one side of the pitch. This is one of the better away sections in the lower leagues because it gives a side-on view rather than placing travelling fans behind a goal.
The usual away allocation is around 1,500, although the full stand can sometimes be made available for larger followings, taking the allocation significantly higher. The stand is seated, covered and offers generally unobstructed views of the pitch.
