Chancellor John Healey is delivering his first Budget as he sets out Labour’s plans for taxes, public spending and the British economy.
Mr Healey is expected to announce a rise in the minimum wage, extend the freeze on fuel duty and unveil tougher powers for HMRC to recover unpaid taxes directly from bank accounts.
The Chancellor faces mounting pressure to boost economic growth, ease the cost of living crisis and increase defence spending amid fears of rising inflation fuelled by the conflict in the Middle East.
His Commons statement comes after Brexit dominated a heated Prime Minister’s Questions, with Andy Burnham clashing with Kemi Badenoch over Britain’s future relationship with the EU.
