Villa seize European glory
Aston Villa ended 30 years of waiting with a commanding 3-0 victory over Freiburg, lifting the Europa League in Istanbul and restoring continental pride to one of English football’s grand old names.
Unai Emery, master of this competition, claimed his fifth Europa League title as Villa produced a performance full of authority, intelligence and ambition. Besiktas Park became the stage for a defining night, watched by nine members of Villa’s 1982 European Cup winning side.
Tielemans and Buendia take control

Youri Tielemans struck four minutes before half time with a superb volley from a short corner routine. In first half stoppage time, Emi Buendia curled a magnificent finish beyond Atubolu from 18 yards, leaving Freiburg with a mountain too steep to climb.

Villa’s superiority became undeniable just before the hour. Buendia, influential and inventive, delivered low to the near post, where Rogers poked home to make it 3-0.
Amadou Onana struck the post, while Buendia could have added another, but the damage had already been done. Villa were champions, composed, ruthless and worthy.
Prince William, a lifelong Villa supporter, celebrated at full time as the club claimed major silverware for the first time since the 1996 League Cup.
Emery builds something lasting
Emery inherited a side sitting three points above the relegation zone in November 2022. Now Aston Villa are European champions, top five contenders and Champions League qualifiers for the second time in three seasons.
This triumph over Freiburg changes the conversation. Villa can now tell prospective signings they offer progress, European nights and trophies. Emery has given the club structure, belief and standards.
