Arsenal given short shrift by Premier League attacker

Arsenal’s summer search for more firepower on the left flank took them towards Brentford winger Kevin Schade, but the message from west London was immediate and emphatic. According to TEAMTALK, Arsenal made an enquiry for the 24-year-old during the window, only to discover Brentford had no appetite whatsoever to discuss a deal.

It is easy to understand why Schade appealed. Arsenal needed to reshape that side of their attack after moving on from both Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, and although Christos Tzolis arrived, there was clearly consideration given to adding another dynamic option. Schade fits the profile of a modern Premier League wide forward, direct, explosive and capable of attacking inside from the left.

What stands out most in this case is not simply Arsenal’s interest, but Brentford’s conviction. The club’s view was so strong that even a fee above their previous biggest sale, the £70m exit of Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, would not have been entertained. That is a striking valuation in itself, and it tells you plenty about how highly Schade is rated internally.

Brentford’s position reflects a club that believes it has outgrown the role of willing seller. For years, the model was admired for spotting talent, improving it and moving players on at the right moment. There is still intelligence in that structure, of course, but this feels like the next phase, keeping elite-level performers for longer and raising the threshold for anyone hoping to prise them away.

Schade has earned that status. Since arriving from Freiburg in 2023, initially on loan and then permanently for £22m, his progress has been steady and increasingly eye-catching. Within Brentford, he is now regarded as one of the division’s standout inverted wingers, and there is a sense that his best years are still to come.
